When the musical the BODYGUARD comes to PPAC- Providence Performing Arts Center on January 915, 2018, that is the predicament of of Deborah Cox.
The recording artist turned actress Deborah Cox stars as Rachel Marron in the musical THE BODYGUARD, which makes its stop in Providence as part of the first U.S. National tour.
Cox stars opposite television star Judson Mills, who plays bodyguard Frank Farmer.
Baby Boomers listening to 90’s radio stations, will remember her single Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here", in rotation most days on Sirius radio.
The signature 1998 single "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" by the Canadian native R & B Singer - songwriter held the record for longest-running number one single on the chart (14 weeks). A record held for nearly eight years.
Almost two decades ago, the multi-platinum R&B artist made her way to Broadway in the show AIDA and later revised the role of Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde. “I think (my performances) helped to show my diversity and these roles helped me to stretch outside of my comfort zone”.
Recognizing that even after having success in Theater, fans still want to hear her body of work as a recording artists, she makes sure that both audiences are happy. “I do different types of performance dates throughout the year”.
Included in these performances throughout the year are collaborations with a variety of artists from different genres; Cyndi Lauper, the Isley Brothers and the Italian classical tenor, Andre Bocelli.
When Mr. Bocelli calls you to sing at the O2 (a State of the Art- Arena in London) even when it’s last minute, you find a way to make it happen!”
For Deborah Cox it’s about the experience stretching the boundaries artistically. The Arista Records recording artist gives credit to her ability to stretch the artistic boundaries to music maestro Clive Davis.
The Music maestro, who we learned from the recent documentary that he mentored and created superstars, including Cox and the women whose shoes she is tasked with trying to place her own print, Whitney Houston.
With the 2018 Film Festival season beginning in a few short weeks, including the launch of the Rhode Island Black Film Festival, April 14-17 2018; I asked Ms. Cox if she had seen the documentary, Clive Davis: the
Soundtrack of Our Lives.
Clive is still a mentor. He gives great advice and we worked so closely together, it’s hard to tell my story without him in it. He gave me a real shot. An amazing opportunity to be an artist. I loved that he allowed me to do that on my own merit. With my voice, songs, my talent, and without having to be scantily clad!
Go check out Deborah Cox when takes the stage to play one of Clive Davis most famous protégé’s Whitney Houston’s role of Rachael Marron. Cox knows there is a there’s a lot of expectations when it comes to this role.
“I had to find my own Rachel Marron character without becoming a caricature. People want to hear these songs a certain way. I don’t freak out about it. I just try to stay in the best shape vocally to be able to deliver”
