ECAS Theater, a Providence Latino arts organization, welcomed
Dominican Congresswoman and women’s rights advocate Minou Tavarez Mirabal to
speak in Rhode Island in celebration of International Women’s Day. Tavarez
Mirabal is the daughter of Minerva Mirabal, one of three heroic Mirabal sisters
whose struggle for freedom and democracy in the 1960s inspired the novel and
film, In the Time of the Butterflies.
Tavarez Mirabal has been a member of the Dominican Republic's
Congress since 2002 and previously served as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 2016, she was the first woman to run for president of her country. She spoke
at the Rhode Island State House on Saturday, March 10. The event was free and
open to the public. The presentation was made possible with support from the
Rhode Island Council on the Humanities.
ECAS Theater is staging the play Yo Soy Minerva, which
tells the story of the Mirabal sisters, on March 23, 24, 30 and 31. For more
