This morning I’d like to share what I think about one of the foremost challenges facing Democrats heading into 2020. I’m not seeking a contribution to my campaign in this email, but there is a link below where you can share your thoughts if you’re interested in doing so. As always, I appreciate your support.
Our top political objectives in 2020 are defeating Donald Trump and taking back the Senate. No matter how you look at it, these are going to be all-hands-on-deck tasks, with little margin for error. Daily we see the media handicapping our Democratic candidates. We must not ignore this salient fact: the massive, vicious Republican attack machine.
No candidate of ours will look the same after this machine has done its dirty work, as you probably remember from the 2016 election.
Under the Republican attack machine’s withering fire, Hillary Clinton went from being the most respected woman on the planet to a candidate some Democrats were ducking from.
The Republican attack machine spat out all sorts of nonsense about Hillary. They planted bogus stories about her health. They used stolen emails. They created a baseless conspiracy theory that almost ended in bloodshed when a man armed with an assault rifle opened fire at a pizza place.
Was any of this true? Of course not. Was it effective? Undoubtedly. Did it let Donald Trump steer the media conversation away from his own proven record of corruption and incompetence? The answer is assuredly yes.
With attention turning to the next election, that same machinery is cranking into gear.
As a party, Democrats should be exposing that machinery now, rather than waiting until our next candidate is in its sights.
Before sending aircraft into contested airspace, armies ordinarily try to do something about hostile anti-aircraft batteries. In this case, it would make sense to follow the money and expose the lies of the Republican attack machine ahead of time.
Dismantling the Republican attack machine isn’t going to be easy, but to avoid a repeat of the last presidential election, Democrats have to face this problem head on. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter: If you have a moment, click here and tell me how you think Democrats can do a better job of taking on the Republican attack machine.
